About

I am the Head of the Design Programme in the Faculty of Creative Arts and Industries at Waipapa Taumata Rau | The University of Auckland. I have a Doctorate in Development Studies and a Masters in Industrial Design. Originally from South Africa, I worked for 18 years as a design academic at the University of Johannesburg. My university lecturing, practice-based research and freelance design experience is passionately focused on critically exploring the power of Design to creatively, collaboratively and sustainably innovate at the complex nexus of social, technological and ecological systems. My design research explores pluriversal design, focussing on Development, the Global South, inequality, indigenous knowledge systems and decolonisation. I also actively work to support resilient local futures through developing appropriate technologies, circular economies and sustainable agrifood systems.

Projects

Practice

“My projects are a village.” – Susan Wakhungu-Githuku

I am a designer and a pragmatist: I have a desire to change existing situations for the better whilst being conscious that this is relative; and, as per Dewey’s pragmatic philosophy, I understand that knowledge and practice are intertwined and inseparable.

In my role as the Head of the Design Programme at Waipapa Taumata Rau | The University of Auckland, I have had to weave both design theory and practice into an innovative transdisciplinary design curriculum. Most of this work has been done in collaboration with a teaching team that were hired from a range of disciplinary backgrounds. We have had to negotiate different disciplinary traditions to arrive at a suitable practical/theoretical balance with most of our teaching being studio-based, informed and underpinned by theoretical lectures.

Another significant outcome of the interconnection between my practice and research was my co-founding of the Design Society Development (DSD) Design for Social Innovation and Sustainability (DESIS) Lab in the Faculty of Art Design & Architecture, UJ in 2014. This lab not only promoted practice-based design research in our faculty, but also created an opportunity for staff and students to refine their research amongst peers.  As one of 53 international DESIS labs based at design schools, it was a place for transdisciplinary and international practice-based design research engagement. As per my interests in contextually relevant design research, during my time in the lab, I led the DSD DESIS Lab’s LOCAL Design in the Global South focus area.

Past practice also included my co-founding of the iZindaba Zokudla (Conversations about Food) project focused on innovation in Soweto’s food system, and my role as a non-executive board member of the Museum of African Design (MOAD), before it closed in 2017.

Having worked in South Africa in the industrial design industry, which can range from exploring local sanitation systems one week to developing rapid produced jewellery in the next, what I teach and practice is extremely broad. Being a generalist allows me to have a comprehensive understanding of multiple facets of design practice, and is important to help navigate the constant change of the 21st Century.  I’ve continued to undertake industrial design freelance work whilst being an academic, however, in the last few years most of my professional industrial design work has inherently been integrated into practice-based research projects. Past freelance design work has included the following clients: SAB Miller (SA), Jacqueline Rabun (UK), MacMillan Publishing (UK), WAACS (NL) and Phumani Paper (SA).

Education

The more I learn, the more I realise how much I don’t know.” – Albert Einstein

During my entire academic career, I have continued to learn. My Master’s in Industrial Design (Technikon Witwatersrand, 2003) is titled Developing new stylistic possibilities for African product design inspired by African cultural heritage and foregrounded my transdisciplinary Doctorate in Development Studies (University of Johannesburg, 2021) titled Designing development: Technology innovation by small-scale urban farmers in Johannesburg.

I have taught in the field of Industrial Design firstly as a part-time Lecturer at the Technikon Witwatersrand (2001-2003), then as a Lecturer (2003-2009) and then as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) (2010-2021) after its merger with the aforementioned institution in 2005. I taught across most modules and year groups in the Department of Industrial Design at UJ and coordinated the Honours in Design, and Postgraduate programmes (MA Industrial Design, MA Design and PhD in Art & Design). I Headed the Department of Industrial Design UJ from 2016-2021. I then relocated to Aotearoa New Zealand to take on the role of Director of Design Programmes for a new transdisciplinary Design programme at Waipapa Taumata Rau | the University of Auckland. This programme was initially was part of Te Waka Tūhura Elam School of Fine Arts and Design, however after a process of staff and leadership consultation in November 2023, the UoA Senate approved the Design Programme becoming its own academic unit within the Faculty of Creative Arts and Industries, with myself as the Head of Programme.  I continue to teach, having developed a new course called Local Making, and a Special Topic on Food Design in 2022 and 2023. I also coordinate the Thesis course in our Masters in Design, and was Graduate Advisor for our Doctorate in Design 2021-2022.

Multiple students have been awarded under my lectureship in national and international competitions including the Good Design Award (2019); Association of Rotational Moulders of Southern Africa (ARMSA) Student Design Award (2005, 2007, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015); the Plastics Institute of Southern Africa (PISA) Student Design Award (2004, 2006, 2008, 2012, 2013, 2015); The Eco Design Competition (2011, 2012); Designboom Seoul International Design Competition (2010); Eskom Energy Efficient Lighting Design Competition (2010); INDEX: AIGA Aspen Design Challenge: Designing Water’s Future (2009); and DESIGN 21: Social Design Network: Power to the Pedal (2008).
