This project explores Coloured/Cape Malay identity through furniture design. It began as a BA Hons ID project in 2019 by Wazier Karim Kara in his blad en bokkie project and extended into a MA Industrial Design in 2020 to become Kanala Stories. Both projects were supervised by me.
Overview:
“Coloured culture does not exist. This statement can be viewed in two ways. Firstly, as a narrative imposed by some South African people, outside the Coloured community. Secondly, as a sincere belief shared by some within the Coloured community who are confused about their own identity. This confusion, due to disruption by colonisation and Apartheid, has created a generational cycle of internal misunderstanding of Coloured racial identity and culture. This confusion and ambiguity with regards to identity, is an experience that I have personally felt while trying to find my place in South African society. Through questioning my placement, I discovered a rich heritage and culture that is scarcely documented in South Africa, especially in design fields.
This study explores Coloured identity and culture through a visual exploration of furniture. Discursive design methods led to the creation of a digital platform, which encouraged discussion and introspection. Aligning with material culture and participatory research methods, furniture pieces were submitted by people within the Coloured community and were analysed to gain a better understanding of the meaning passed down through generations. The furniture pieces do not represent Coloured identity because of their physical appearance, but rather the meaning, history, and memory they are associated with. Similarly, Coloured identity is not defined by physical appearance but rather, by the memories, and sense of community from people within the Coloured community in South Africa. This study added to the existing research available about the Coloured community to encourage others to broaden their understanding and investigate their own identity. In a multicultural society like South Africa, identity plays an inherent role in our daily lives” Kara, 2022.
